The status of interpretive hypotheses.

Students will learn that sociologists collect their data through a number of research methods. One of the most common is the social survey, in which a sample of people respond to a questionnaire that is administered on paper, in a personal interview, by telephone, or over the internet. Sociologists may also engage in a participant observation, in which they become part of a group they seek to understand. Some sociologists, like psychologists, conduct experiments, while others rely principally on historical or archival data to test their hypotheses. The choice of data collection methods depends upon the kind of data that are needed to test a hypothesis. Some hypotheses may be tested through multiple methods. Students will learn how sociologists tabulate their data using statistical methods, some of which are highly sophisticated. It is common to report measures of central tendency for each variable, for example, the mean or median values. It is also common to report a measure of the spread from the mean, such as the standard deviation or interquartile range. Measures of association indicate whether and/or how closely two variables are related to each other. A measure of association such as chi-square can show if the relationship of two variables might have happened by chance or if it is a significant relationship; it is also possible to calculate the strength of an association through the use of a correlation coefficient. When sociologists measure one variable taking into account the effect of a second variable, they are said to “control” for the second variable, and multivariate statistics are sophisticated means to control simultaneously for the effects of many independent variables.

Operationalize each of the following hypotheses in at least two alternative ways. Specify:

Whenever a hypothesis is formulated, the most important thing is to be precise about what one's variables are, what the nature of the relationship between them might be, and how one can go about conducting a study of them.

Hypothesis 4: Use of corporal punishment in a family varies directly with SES.

Existing evidence and social theories that recognize the connections , and how , would suggest that both economic class and educational attainment of the one's parents would have a positive effect on educational attainment. In this case, economic class and educational attainment of one's parents are independent variables, and one's educational attainment is the dependent variable--it is hypothesized to be dependent on the other two.

Next, we need to operationally define the sleep deprivation variable. In our example, let’s say that sleep deprivation refers to those participants who have had less than five hours of sleep the night before the test. Finally, we need to create an operational definition for the test variable. For this example, the test variable will be defined as a student’s score on a chapter exam in the introductory psychology course.

What does the statistical significance mean?
refers to the confidence level of rejecting the null hypothesis by accepting a certain level of error. In other words, if the result is non-significant, it means that the result is unable to reject the null hypothesis because the chance of having such result is greater than a confidence level or level of error that we can accept.

All statistical tests begin with certain assumptions that, together with the laws of probability, enable statisticians to develop the tables we use to determine statistical significance, for example, tables for the normal distribution, t, chi-square, and F.

What is an operationalized hypothesis

In the example of quadriceps strengthening, the strengthening protocol used is the independent variable, and the maximal torque generated isometrically on an isokinetic dynamometer by the quadriceps muscles is the dependent variable.

What does it mean to operationalize variables scholarly …

For example, in our imaginary experiment on the effects of sleep deprivation on test performance, we would need to create very specific operational definitions for our two variables. If our is "Students who are sleep deprived will score significantly lower on a test," then we would have a few different concepts to define.

What are statistical significance tests?
The level of significance does not indicate how much likely it is that your research hypothesis is correct; it only helps you to make a decision about rejecting the null hypothesis. It has only an indirect bearing on confirmation of your research hypothesis
