How do plants make food (photosynthesis basics)?

Most units on plants are taught in the spring but, with its use of photosynthesis as a center concept, it could be useful to start a discussion of the process while looking at the changing leaves in the fall. The unit came from a desire to deal with the requirements of the third grade curriculum in New Haven, as well as, to introduce the far-reaching social implications of the topic of photosynthesis.

How does light intensity and duration affect the rate of photosynthesis?

They use a PSI type reaction center.
The primary pigment involved is bacteriochlorophyll g, which is unique to the group and has a unique absorption spectrum; this gives the heliobacteria their own environmental niche.
Phototrophy takes place at the cell membrane, which does not form folds or compartments as it does in purple bacteria.
Even though heliobacteria are phototrophic, they can grow without light by fermentation of pyruvate.
Plants obtain their own food by using the energy they get from the sun.
The plant captures sunlight with the pigment chlorophyll
Then the sunlight turns into food and sugars.
Extra is called ATP.

What Are Photosynthesis and Respiration?

Don't understand what all these letters and numbers could possibly represent?

By using the energy of sunlight, plants canconvert carbon dioxide and water intocarbohydrates and oxygen in a process calledphotosynthesis. As photosynthesis requiressunlight, this process only happens during theday. We often like to think of this as plants`breathing in carbon dioxide and `breathing outoxygen. However, the process is not exactly thissimple. Just like animals, plants need to breakdown carbohydrates into energy. Oxygen is requiredto do this. Then why do the plants get rid of allthe oxygen they produce during photosynthesis? Theanswer is, they do not. Plants actually hold on toa small amount of the oxygen they produced inphotosynthesis and use that oxygen to break downcarbohydrates to give them energy.

Butwhat happens at night when there is no sunlightwhich is needed in photosynthesis? Interestingly,in order to maintain their metabolism and continuerespiration at night, plants must absorb oxygenfrom the air and give off carbon dioxide (which isexactly what animals do). Fortunately for all ofus oxygen breathers, plants produce approximatelyten times more oxygen during the day that whatthey consume at night.

Like plants, they use chlorophyll in photosynthesis.

I believe that it is not possible for any plant to give off O2 when it cannot do photosynthesis.

The Effects of Elevated Carbon Dioxide Levels on the Transpiratoin Rates of Zonal Geranium PlantsHow Does the Introduction of NaF Affect the Rate of Photosynthesis in Isolated Chloroplasts?

Very soon after, more pieces of the puzzle were found by two chemists working in Geneva. Jean Senebier, a swiss pastor, found that "fixed air" (CO2) was taken up during photosynthesis, and Theodore de Saussure discovered that the other reactant necessary was water. The final contribution to the story came from a German surgeon, Julius Robert Mayer (right), who recognised that plants convert solar energy into chemical energy. He said:

Again, I would begin with a question: What do all humans and animals need to live?

What Are Photosynthesis and Respiration? - dummies

The process called photosynthesis literally means, “to put together with light.” From the sugar the plants make starch that they store throughout the plant.

What Is Photosynthesis? From Light Energy to Chemical …

But they use other things too.
Organisms That Use Photosynthesis
The Steps of Photosynthesis (Simplified)
The plant gathers sunlight to convert into energy.
Then the light energy forms into hydrogen and oxygen.
hydrogen joins with carbon dioxide and creates sugars.
Sugars are then separated and then distributed throughout the plant.
Parts that conduct in the photo.

How Do Plants Make Food? How Photosynthesis Works?

Anoxygenic photosynthetic and oxygenic photosynthetic organisms use different electron donors for photosynthesis. Moreover, anoxygenic photosynthesis takes place in only one type of reaction center, while oxygenic photosynthesis takes place in two, each of which absorbs a different wavelength of light, according to Govindjee and Whitmarsh. However, the general principles of the two processes are similar. Below are the steps of photosynthesis, focusing on the process as it occurs in plants.

Plants make their own food thru the process of photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the first stage of energy flow through an ecosystem. You and all other animals on earth rely on the energy that plants store for life. But animals aren’t the only organisms that burn energy. Plants burn energy as they grow, too. In both plants and animals, the process of — which releases stored energy for use — occurs in the mitochondria inside each cell.

We will begin with animals and then spend more time on what the exchange of gases is like in plants; this should lead into a direct discussion of photosynthesis.
