Wavetable Synthesis | The Synthesizer Academy

employs the use of a table with various switchable frequencies played in certain orders (wavetables). As a key is pressed, the sound moves in order through the wavetable, not spontaneously changing the waveform, but smoothly changing its shape into the various waves in the table.

The waveform is integratedmultiple times before it is stored in a wavetable.

Various other variants of wavetable synthesis have seen use, in particular wavetable stacking, involving multiple wavetables, the outputs of which are combined using crossfading techniques [].

Wavetable synthesis takes advantage of this ..

Fig. 1 Using all values in the wavetable gives an exact copy of the storedwaveform.

Vector Synthesis is almost exactly the same as Wavetable Synthesis, only it employs a two-dimensional grid, through which wavetables can be made even smoother and works with sequences as well as wavetables.

We will design software instruments that implement additive synthesis, subtractive, FM, sampling, wavetables, granular, spectral and physical modeling synthesis; and digital effects algorithms such as phasing, flanging, chorus, distortion and reverberation.

The wavetable synthesizer will start by playing ..

- see wavetable soundcard

As will be seen shortly, there is an extremely fruitful physical interpretation of wavetable synthesis, namely the digital waveguide, which revolutionized physical modeling sound synthesis through the same efficiency gains.

A hybrid sampling and wavetable synthesis method is introduced for matching acoustic instruments using genetic algorithm optimization. The method uses sampling for the critical attack portion of the tone and wavetable synthesis to match the more gradually changing sustain and decay. To perform a smooth transition between them, a hybrid sampling-wavetable crossfade is used. Various tones from the piano, harp, glockenspiel, and temple block were matched. Listening tests have found the matches indistinguishable from the original tones.

- Similar to wavetablesynthesizer but adds waveshaping to the waveforms for additionaltimbral complexity.

Wavetable synthesis - Wikipedia

Keyboard scales allow any note to be assigned to any key. Thesetype of scales allow more than 12 notes per octave. Be forewarnedthat many wavetable based synthesizers do not remap the samplesproperly when the retuned note is out of the sample range of theoriginal sample pitch. For instance, on the early Proteus modulesif you retune C4 to a value near C5 in the key tuning table, theinstrument plays the correct pitch but the wrong sample. It stillplays the sample created for the C4 pitch, rather than the correctsample for the C5 pitch. This creates chipmunk type effects evenworse than the normal sampling transposition.

Wavetable Sampling Synthesis - ResearchGate

Such a sound may be efficiently reproduced through storage of only the attack and a single period of the pitched part of the waveform, which is stored in a wavetable and looped [].

Sampling Wavetable Synthesis (“sampling”) is possibly the most commercially popular music synthesis technique in use today (1997). The techniques used in sampling include the traditional playback of digitized audio waveforms from RAM wavetables, combined with sample rate conversion to provide pitch shifting. Sampling evolved from traditional computer music wavetable synthesis techniques, where the wavetable size simply grew to include an entire musical note. Extensions to simple wavetable playback include looping of waveforms, enveloping of waveforms, and filtering of waveforms to provide for improved expressivity, i.e., spectral and time structure variation of the perfomed notes. A simple comparison is given between band limited sample rate conversion for pitch shifting, linear interpolation, and traditional computer music phase increment oscillator design.

Higher-Order Integrated Wavetable and Sampling Synthesis

- An instrument in a piano stylecabinet. Usually the synthesis is some form of wavetable synthesis, but physical modeling and other variations are possible. Auto-accompanimentis a common feature for these instruments.
