Upper Extremity/Arm Prosthetics
With either type of prosthesis, Conventional or Myoelectric, your non-amputated or “good” arm will now become your dominant arm if you have a one-sided amputation. Over time you will become used to the weight of the prosthesis and you should be able to tolerate a full days wear.
Capable of effectuating almost all of the movements as a human arm and hand and with more than 100 sensors in the hand and upper arm, the Modular Prosthetic Limb (MPL) is the world’s most sophisticated upper-extremity prosthesis. There are currently six MPLs being used for neurorehabilitation research across the United States, with four more in development.

A lower arm amputation is defined as an amputation that occurs between the wrist and elbow, and leaves a portion of the radius/ulna intact. This level of amputation is commonly referred to as below the elbow. A prosthetic solution for this level of amputation will include a socket, a wrist unit, and a grasping or hand unit. The components for upper-limb prostheses are extremely diverse and can be utilized to accomplish a very wide variety of activities.
Our upper extremity team makes facing this challenge a little easier by working with each patient on their functional, psychological and occupational needs. From the initial patient assessment through lifetime follow-up rehabilitation, the Hanger Upper Extremity Prosthetics Program provides a continuum of individualized care. An upper extremity (arm) prosthesis may be fitted as early as three months of age or soon after the amputation to promote normal development.

The initial fitting of an upper limb prosthesis can be a frustrating experience for amputees, impairing the learning of prosthesis control. Therefore, the prosthesis manufacturer Otto Bock in collaboration with Vienna University of Technology developed a Virtual Reality environment in which tasks can be trained in order to continuously motivate the amputees to practice their control skills without taking risks. optical motion capture system, developed by Vienna UT, is used to track the amputee's arm and head movement to allow for 3D input and correct visualization of the virtual environment in a head mounted display. Along with the tracking data, electromyography is used to generate input for grasping control of the virtual prosthesis, creating a realistic simulation. Tracking data of iotracker and electromyography is fed into , an Augmented Reality Framework for Distributed Collaboration. ARTiFICe maps the tracking data to the virtual objects, using Unity3D game engine for networking, real time rendering and object’s physical behaviour.

An amputation of the upper arm is defined as any amputation that occurs somewhere between the elbow and shoulder joints, and leaves a portion of the humerus intact. This amputation is also commonly referred to as above elbow. An upper arm prosthesis will require the same components as the lower arm devices, and will also require an elbow to allow for easier positioning of the device.
