Frederick Jackson Turner (November 14, 1861 – March 14 1932) was, with , the most influential American historian of the early 20th century. He is best known for his announced in his 1893 paper on "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," his theories of geographical sectionalism, his many PhD students, and his leadership of the history profession. In recent years western history has seen pitched battles among "Turnerians," "anti-Turnerians," "neo-Turnerians," and "post-Turnerians," with the only point of agreement being his enormous impact on historical scholarship and the American mind.

Hi Allan, Thanks so much for writing back to me, much appreciated. Yes, I was in agreement with you regarding Rogerian counselling, that was up until a few years ago. When I was approaching my finish stop of my Diploma studies, I came across some research, which looked at the PCA. I am writing a brief but which I hope to be a concise review of the criticisms levelled at it. First of all, McConnaughty (1987) has reviewed much of the data regarding the PCA and argues that there is more variability among therapists within one technique, than there is among the techniques themselves. Hence, it appears to be the therapist not the technique, that is important for improvement.

By using Turner as his main character, Oates generates a lot of sympathy on the plight of slaves in the hands of their dominating masters. There are several instances in the book where Turners life takes unlucky twists. From the death of his master to the loss of the special status, he had previously held in the Turner family, Nathanial had gone through a series of unlucky events in life. The clarity and simplicity of the book make it easily understandable for the general reader. Being an historical account, Oates book is an educative masterpiece aimed at changing people’s perceptions of the American slave era by presenting the story from the slave’s perspective (Greq, paragraph 4). It gives a detailed account of the events of Southampton County to the reader who only has superficial knowledge of Nathanial Turner. It is a scholarly analytical account of historical details suitable for those wanting to delve much deeper into the study of slavery in the United States (Briley 2). The book captures essentially the difficulties surfs undergo in their daily lives, the opportunities denied, and their emotions and reactions towards their slave masters.

(5) The agency responsible for the campaign later confirmed men had been the main targets, and the aim had been to persuade them to spend more time (and money, of course) talking to friends and relatives on the phone.

Two questions which essentially have the same answer: I am currently writing a paper on Client/Person Centered Therapy and need to include information on how the theory differentiates between clients of different ages or developmental stages. We are looking for papers/references/evidence of Trans- Cultural aspects of the Person Centred Approach. I would be grateful for any advice. PE Wolverhampton, England.

You were right in suggesting that my question could be "is the P.C approach suitable for this kind of work?" and I shall go further and ask "is it enough?" There have been many suggestions in various books about using cognitive or behavioral interventions some of which make me shudder! In my research so far I am beginning to discover a corollary between the behaviour of traumatised veterans and traumatised children, but lots more research to be done in that area.

Turner ignored gender and race, downplayed class, and left no room for victims. His values presented a challenge to historians of the 1960s and later who stressed that race, class, and gender are powerful explanatory tools. The new generation of historians have stressed gender, ethnicity, professional categorization, and the contrasting victor and victim legacies of and imperialist expansion. Some criticized Turner's frontier thesis and the theme of American exceptionalism. The disunity of the concept of the West, the similarity of American expansion to European colonialism, U.S. imperialism in the late 19th century, and the realities of minority group oppression revealed the limits of Turnerian and exceptionalist paradigms.

The idea that boys and men have a communication problem was sufficiently consensual by the mid-1990s to sustain British Telecom's lengthy 'it's good to talk' campaign, in which a series of advertisements compared men's brusqueness unfavourably with women's verbal facility.(5) In both expert and popular domains, a stereotype of male conversational cluelessness now functions as shorthand for a whole range of ways in which men are felt to be a problem.

Turner's ideas impacted many areas of historiography. In the history of religion, for example Boles (1993) notes that William Warren Sweet at the University of Chicago Divinity School, argued that churches adapted to the characteristics of the frontier, creating new denominations such as the Mormons, the Church of Christ, the Disciples of Christ, and the Cumberland Presbyterians. The frontier, Boles and Sweet argued, shaped uniquely American institutions such as revivals, camp meetings, and itinerant preaching. This view dominated religious historiography for decades. Moos (2002) shows that 1910s to 1940s black filmmaker and novelist incorporated Turner's frontier thesis into his work. Micheaux promoted the West as a place where blacks could transcend race and earn economic success through hard work and perseverance. Slatta (2001) argues that the widespread popularization of Turner's frontier thesis impacted popular histories, motion pictures, and novels. These popular mediums characterize the West in terms of individualism, frontier violence, and rough justice. Frontierland of the late 20th century reflected the myth of rugged individualism that celebrated what was perceived to be the American heritage. Turner's thesis about the frontier grafted itself tightly to an American mythical self-image of rugged individualists (cowboys) on the edge of civilization.
