Figure 3 Masks for the Prewitt gradient edge detector.
The proposed scheme adopts Canny's three criteria as a guide to derive a wavelet--style edge filter such that the edge points of an image can be detected efficiently and accurately at different scales.
Edge detection is the process that attempts to characterize the intensity changes in the image in terms of the physical processes that have originated them.
There are many ways to perform edge detection
In this age of advanced technology, there is an increasing demand for individuals with expertise in designing experiments and analyzing large complex data sets via the latest advances in computing technology. In particular, there is a real need for professionals with a Ph.D. in Applied Statistics. Statisticians are in high demand in various areas of scientific study. For example, in biomedical field, they are needed to develop methods for evaluating the efficacy and safety of new medications/drugs, surgeries, and other treatments. In the Bioinformatics area they address topics such as gene therapy, genomic research, and disease mapping. In environmental studies, statisticians are needed to detect exposure of human population to particulate matter based on air quality, to identify polluted areas based on soil samples, and to model areal data. Statisticians are also needed to analyze big data, especially in areas of fraud detection, cyber security, and defense related issues. Statisticians are being recruited in a variety of industries, including insurance and finance institutions, manufacturing and service businesses. Thus, the Ph.D. in Applied Statistics combines theory with applications to prepare students to pursue careers in academia, research organizations, government, and private industry.

Since Canny's criteria are suitable for those edge detectors that detect local extremes, the desired wavelet is therefore chosen to be anti--symmetric.

To avoid this overflow we therange image by a factor 0.25 prior to the edge detection and then the output, as can be seen inAlthough the result has improved significantly, westill cannot find a threshold so that a closed line along the boundaryremains and all the noise disappears.

Applying the Sobel operator yieldsandthresholding the result at a value of 150 produces We can see that the noise has increased duringthe edge detection and it is no longer possible to find a thresholdwhich removes all noise pixels and at the same time retains theedges of the objects.

Today more professions are depending on data analysis to assist in making informed decisions. Organizations need individuals with knowledge in statistics and methods to collect, analyze, interpret data, and communicate the results. There is a growing demand for individuals who are well trained in designing experiments, statistical modeling, making predictions and forecasts, and analyzing large complex data sets commonly encountered in various areas of scientific study. For example, statisticians are needed in such areas as biomedical fields and bioinformatics to address drug development and health related issues, in environmental studies to address pollution and contamination. They are also needed to analyze big data encountered in internet traffic, fraud detection, cyber security and national defense. Statisticians are employed by such industries as insurance, health, finance, manufacturing and service. The Master of Science degree in Applied Statistics at UTSA is designed to meet these demands. It includes instruction in a broad range of applied statistical methods and computational tools to prepare students for careers as government, industrial, or academic statisticians, or to pursue doctoral studies in statistics.

There had been an ongoing controversy over health effects ofelectromagnetic fields (EMF) for years (e.g., extremely lowfrequency radiation and the Navy's Project Seafarer; emissions ofhigh power lines and video display terminals; radar and othermilitary and industrial sources of radio frequencies andmicrowaves, such as plastic sealers and molders.) Less is knownof Department of Defense (DOD) and Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) interest in anti-personnel applications of the invisibleenergies. The ability of certain parameters of EMF to causehealth effects, including neurological and behavioraldisturbances, has been part of the military and CIA arsenal foryears.
Capabilities of the energies to cause predictable andexploitable effects or damages can be gleaned from discussion ofhealth effects from environmental exposures. Interestingly, somescientists funded by the DOD or CIA to research and developinvisible electromagnetic weapons have voiced strong concern(perhaps even superior knowledge or compensatory to guilt) overpotentially serious consequences of environmental exposures.
Eldon Byrd who worked for Naval Surface Weapons, Office ofNon-Lethal Weapons, was commissioned in 1981 to developelectromagnetic devices for purposes including "riot control,"clandestine operations and hostage removal. In the context of acontroversy over reproductive hazards to Video Display Terminal(VDT) operators, he wrote of alterations in brain function ofanimals exposed to low intensity fields. Offspring of exposedanimals "exhibited a drastic degradation of intelligence later inlife... couldn't learn easy tasks... indicating a very definiteand irreversible damage to the central nervous system of thefetus." With VDT operators exposed to weak fields, there havebeen clusters of miscarriages and birth defects (with evidence ofcentral nervous system damage to the fetus). Byrd also wrote ofexperiments where behavior of animals was controlled by exposureto weak electromagnetic fields. "At a certain frequency andpower intensity, they could make the animal purr, lay down androll over."
Notorious Jose Delgado, advocate of a psycho-civilizedsociety through mind control, no longer implants electrodes inthe brains of mental patients and prisoners; he now inducesprofound behavioral changes (hyper-activity, passivity, etc.) byexposing animals to precisely tuned EMFs. He has also written ofgenetic damage produced by weak EMF fields, similar to thoseemitted by VDTs. Invariably, brain tissue damage and skeletaldeformation was observed in new born chicks that had beenexposed. He was concerned enough to check emissions from theappliances in his kitchen.
Ross Adey induces calcium efflux in brain tissue with lowpower level fields (a basis for the CIA and military's "confusionweaponry") and has done behavioral experiments with radarmodulated at electroencephalogram (EEG) rhythms. He isunderstandably concerned about environmental exposures within 1to 30 Hz (cycles per second), either as a low frequency or anamplitude modulation on a microwave or radio frequency, as thesecan physiologically interact with the brain even at very lowpower densities.
