My education taught that Smoot-Hawley contributed significantly to the Great Depression. But it was always framed as a reduction of trade; never a word of a concentrated monetary affect.
Very interesting and informative podcast. I found the impacts of the depression on Canada's banking system particularly interesting. Can you recommend further reading on this subject?
Depression Thesis Statement Examples
Economists still debate whether a specific event might have sparked the Great Depression, such as the 1929 crash of the Wall Street stock market. However, there is general consensus that the Depression was the result of widespread drops in world commodity prices and sudden declines in economic demand and credit, leading to rapid declines in global trade and rising unemployment.
The worldwide Great Depression of the early 1930s was a social and economic shock that left millions of Canadians unemployed, hungry and often homeless. Few countries were affected as severely as Canada during what became known as the Dirty Thirties, due to Canada’s heavy dependence on raw material and farm exports, combined with a crippling Prairies drought.

The burden of the Depression was also unequally distributed between classes. Although wages dropped throughout the 1930s, prices declined even faster. As a result, the standard of living of property owners and those with jobs increased. Farmers, young people, small businessmen and the unemployed bore the brunt of economic hardship.
Canada did not have an adequate system of dispensing welfare to the jobless. Although unemployment was a national problem, federal governments led by Conservative Prime Minister (1930-35) and his Liberal predecessor and successor , refused, for the most part, to provide work for the jobless and insisted that their care was primarily a local and provincial responsibility. King, who was prime minister when the Depression first started, was reluctant to even acknowledge that an economic crisis had struck Canada – a stance that led to his defeat at the hands of Bennett in 1930 (King and his Liberals were re-elected in 1935).

I Hate My Thesis: Thesis-induced Depression
Whenever I hear one of your podcasts on the Great Depression, I am struck by how it is assumed that free market capitalism is superior to socialism and fascism, and implied that this was apparent to Western politicians in the 30s. I don't think we can take that for granted at all. Sure, it turned out that way, but isn't it reasonable to assume that a lot of American policy was driven by a fear that capitalism, as a system, wasn't going to survive the crisis? And that planned economies were the wave of the future? I'd love to hear someone address this point specifically.

For those interested, Jude Wanniski gives a very similar "headlines"-style analysis of the way politics influenced the economy and expectations of the future during the Great Depression in his book The Way the World Works. Some may find the analysis a bit dry (it's buried in the middle of the book), but is worth looking at if you liked how it was done in this podcast.

of George Mason University and author of talks with EconTalk host about the impact of the Smoot-Hawley Act on the economy. The standard view is that the decrease in trade that followed Smoot-Hawley was not big enough to be a significant contributor to the Great Depression. Rustici argues that this Keynesian approach that looks at aggregate spending misses a crucial mechanism for understanding the impact of Smoot-Hawley. Rustici focuses on the impact of Smoot Hawley on bank closings and the money supply. Smoot-Hawley launched an international trade war that reduced world trade dramatically. This had large concentrated regional effects in the United States and around the world in areas that depended on trade. Those were the areas where the first banks collapsed, contracting the money supply via the fractional reserve banking system. Rustici argues that the Keynesian indictment of the price system ignores the policy failures that destroyed the institutions that make the price system work.

At the onset of the Great Depression, the American ruling class had already witnessed the Russian Revolution and the rise of European fascism. The notion that the ruling order could be violently swept away was certainly not far-fetched at that time.
