SXSW Film

This past week I attended SXSW for the second year. Last year I went with an Interactive badge and this year went gold to do Film as well. I have been slowly getting into film making and writing the past year and thought it would be a great change to not only see some awesome films but attend some panels along the way. I have spent a lot of time recently writing and storyboarding ideas but haven’t actually shown anybody yet. One thing that was different having both badges versus last year is spare time. This year I didn’t have nearly the amount of time I did last year to do other parts of SXSW like the tradeshow, screenburn, trying new places to eat and just in general hanging out at the convention center. I found myself bouncing from panel to panel pretty quickly and then heading to the Paramount for film screenings which included either a decent walk or the film shuttle and then standing in line for awhile. Plus the hours spend watching films eat up a lot of time that I had last year.

That being said, having a film badge this year was awesome and I will be doing Gold from now on. I attended some great film panels on storyboarding, shooting films improve style, visual effects on a budge and blowing stuff up. I learned some great things from these panels and got inspired the entire time. I attempted to bounce between interactive and film panels as much as I could and felt a little disappointed that I didn’t get to attend more film panels. Along with the panels comes great film screenings. The opening night movie and my first film to see at SXSW was Kick-Ass. We waited in line for awhile and the movie was just amazing. There is something very different about attending not only a film screening/world premier but watching it in a 1,200 seat theater with the cast, writers and crew of the movie. Kinda makes you want to see every movie at a screening. Staying for the Q&A after every film is also worth it. (more…)

The Dark Knight

There are no real spoilers in this post about the movie, however if you want to know nothing you might want to overlook this post.

I’ve had my ticket to the midnight showing of The Dark Knight for awhile and last night was finally the night. I ended up getting there about 10:30pm which is about 30-40minutes later then I wanted to but still wasn’t bad. The theater I was at, the only one who was showing Batman here in town, had 5 screens showing last night between 12:01am and 12:30am, all sold out. I was in 12:01 and when the time came for the movie it was awesome. The last Batman was good but I didn’t think it was amazing. However, this was one of the best movies in a long time. Everybody was worried for awhile about Heath being The Joker and comparing him to Jack.

That time is gone. Heath set a new standard for a villain and will always be The Joker. They left some amazing story lines for The Joker to continue in the next movie and after seeing it, it really hits you that he won’t be coming back as the character. He did an amazing job. While watching the movie you don’t see Heath at all, you don’t even realize that Heath is the man behind the makeup. You only see The Joker, not a character. He really dives into the role. Overall the whole movie was great. Most people will talk mostly about Heath but Two-Face was portrayed much better then in the past and the emotional problems that Batman faced made a great story. Needless to say I will be going to see the movie again this coming week. As, I don’t think once will do it justice.

Lazy Day

Sometimes everybody needs a lazy day. Today was one of those days. I had actually planned to get some work done today on a custom coach management system for a client but instead caught up on some tv shows and watched a movie with Melissa. I thought I was only 2 weeks behind on Journeyman but ended up being 4 weeks behind. Lots of good new shows this season and some great seasons to other shows, including House. Waiting to see how this WGA Strike pans out. I’m hoping it doesn’t effect the final season of Scrubs. Been looking forward to it. We watched The Invisible tonight. Its a movie I’ve wanted to see and turned out to be pretty good. Not a great movie but worth the watch. Tomorrow will be a long day as I have a ton of stuff on my to-do list including a redesign for a church in Lawton, complete a design for a bar/live music venue, and attempt to get some work done on this custom php project for LawtonSoccer. Thats on top of a long list of emails that need to be sent out tomorrow and those that need to be replied to. That doesn’t include that 2532|Gigs is still dead due to a bug in the login system (that we still can’t get fixed). So, we will see how the weeks goes.
