Teenage Engineering OP-1 Portable Sampling Synthesiser

NOTES
The MW note arrangement facility allows Wav, Mp3, Vsti, and Midi sounds/notes to be arranged over six octaves and provides total control over all the necessary parameters including envelope for attack, decay, sustain and release of audio samples.

The paper aims to examine how synthesisers contribute to the stylisation of Hip-Hop sub-genres, and investigate how the relationship between synthesis and the sample-based process has evolved throughout the style’s trajectory.

Samplers, Synthesisers, & Disc ..

This is the technique used in "sampling." Most samplers designate a part of the sample for each component of the ADSR envelope, and then repeat that section while changing the volume for that segment of the envelope.

KROSS 2, the long-awaited successor of the KROSS, is a compact, portable workstation with a huge range of sounds. While maintaining its identity as ultra-lightweight, compact, and capable of running on batteries, this new model dramatically enhances KROSS’s sounds and functionality. In addition to a total of more than a thousand preset sounds, expansion PCM memory has been newly added. Also new is a pad sampler that allows full-fledged sampling, and USB audio/MIDI interface functionality. The colour scheme is even more stylish, and the user interface allows intuitive operation even by beginners.

Furthermore, the use of synthesis in sample-based Hip-Hop challenges the purist focus on phonographic sampling as the sole route towards stylistic legitimacy.

The Fairlight shown here is an early and expensive pioneer of the sampler (following on from earlier tape based mellotrons). Here the sound of a given note of a musical instrument is digitally recorded. When the user presses the corresponding key on an electronic keyboard the sound is replayed. If the user presses a different key at a different key strike pressure to sound is pitch shifted (by changing speed of playback) and volume modified appropriately. The problem with this is that the resulting timbre will not reflect that of a real instrument. For instance if you sample a sung ‘hello’ at middle C, the voice will sound distinctly munch-kin like when played just a few notes higher. As real musical instruments vary considerably with pitch and volume dynamics so samplers need to compensate for this with multiple samples for various pitch ranges and keyboard strike pressures. The result is, the more information recorded the more convincing the sound. This causes a problem if memory is limited since ten seconds of uncompressed stereo CD quality audio will take up a 1MB. However, by streaming data directly from a hard disk sample files of the order of gigabytes can be created. The technique is employed by Nemesys’s ‘Gigasampler ' software.

Alan had one of the first of the new Fairlight sampling synthesisers.

There are two types of Bitstream technologies; Phillips uses pulse densitymodulation, where a series of equal width pulses, is produced with the number ofpulses per time frame (sample rate) being directly related to the amplitude ofthe signal. So for our conveyor belt analogy, Phillips puts equal sizeddrops in the buckets but not necessarily in each one. The more bucketsthat have a drop in them, the higher the amplitude. Matsushita (Panasonicand Technics/Teac) uses pulse width modulation, where a series of pulses isproduced but the amount of water is varied depending on how fast the signal ischanging.

Synthesizers / Keyboards | KORG (USA)

(In Press) The use of synthesisers in Hip-Hop has ranged from sonic emulation, to sample augmentation, to original creation (arguably, of timbres and sub-genres alike).

Digital synthesizer - Wikipedia

Rather than using specific hardware, relatively ordinary PCs with popular sound cards have the ability to emulate oscillators, ADSRs, filters, frequency modulators, samplers, etc in real time. The generic nature of PCs allows users to connect up virtual synthesiser components in many familiar and totally new ways via intuitive user interfaces. The result can be very impressive, for instance it's hard to tell the difference between a real minimoog and a virtual minimoog created in Native-Instruments Generator software. Synthesiser components can be selected from menus, dragged around, inter-connected and assigned virtual controllers such as knobs and sliders.

A digital synthesizer is a synthesizer that uses digital ..

MW can support up to 1000 tracks for sequencing, though a typical arrangement requires only a small percentage of the available tracks. Audio samples, audio loops, mp3s, virtual instruments and MIDI sounds can all be sequenced along with any effects that are to be used in the composition. The MW sequencer has one of the quickest and easiest interfaces to master.

Oneof these rules, both for computers and synthesisers, is that the whole thingmust work at a constant sample rate, like a rapid heart beat pumping thesuccessive digital samples through the veins of the entire synth.
