As we can see, there is a close relationship between the action spectrum and absorption spectrum of photosynthesis. There are many different types of photosynthetic pigments which will absorb light best at different wavelengths. However the most abundant photosynthetic pigment in plants is chlorophyll and therefore the rate of photosynthesis will be the greatest at wavelengths of light best absorbed by chlorophyll (400nm-525nm corresponding to violet-blue light). Very little light is absorbed by chlorophyll at wavelengths of light between 525nm and 625 (green-yellow light) so the rate of photosynthesis will be the least within this range. However, there are other pigments that are able to absorb green-yellow light such as carotene. Even though these are present in small amounts they allow a low rate of photosynthesis to occur at wavelengths of light that chlorophyll cannot absorb.

Photosynthesis and transpiration are greatly influenced bystomatal behavior. The stomatal opening is affected by CO2concentration, vapor pressure gradient (VPG), light, turgor pressure caused bychanges in potassium and organic acids, and by ABA (Raschke, 1970; Schulze andHall, 1982). Stomatal and internal conductances, either independently ortogether, have been proposed as the cause of changes in Pn with leaf age. Moststudies have shown that the decline in Pn is associated with a reduction instomatal conductance (Begg and Jarvis, 1968; Buttery, and Buzzel 1977;Constable and Rawson, 1980). Hodgkinson (1974) reported the internalconductance of lucerne leaves had marked reductions as they aged beyond 40days. Salih (1977) found that stomatal conductance of bean began to declineeven while internal conductance was still increasing. Bhatti et al. (1998)pointed out the reduction in photosynthesis was probably caused in part by anincrease in stomatal resistance. Constable and Rawson (1980) observed similarresults with cotton. Our data gave indications that Asian pear cv. Huanghuaand Jingshiu II had the same relationship between stomatal CO2conductance and leaf age as reported for other plant species.
