For each woman, limb loss was followed by a grieving period moderated by individual personal resilience. Christine stated that while "every part of every day is a struggle. . . it is not something that’s going to stop me from living my life." Lisa spoke of being determined to stay alive because her husband was still struggling with the death of his younger brother the prior year in Iraq. She told her Landstuhl nurses, "I’ll be fine. I lived, I’m all right." Both Lisa and Amy were very positive, upbeat, and reassuring to their families. The women who self-reported an innate positive outlook and those with the most time in the military demonstrated the highest resilience.
Through strength training, I was challenged to start using my prosthetic arm. It was a whole new experience, using my prosthetic arm during sports. The symmetrical movement of both arms simultaneously was very awkward in the beginning. I became aware how important my right side was for a good balance in my body.

Lisa lost both arms transhumeral as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technician. She received training on a body-powered prosthetic arm with levers, pulleys, and hooks, but hated it. She said, "They just get in the way more than they help." Lisa primarily uses her residual limbs and feet along with adaptive equipment and a service dog to negotiate daily life:
All six women in this study had to adjust to a new body image in the mirror. Christine knew two military women who were arm or hand amputees who always wore their prostheses. Sarah commented that the "aesthetic component is more important for women, but I don’t think it is fair to say that men do not care." Among these veterans, body image was a bigger issue for the two women who lost upper limbs because it was so visible and affected their ability to perform daily life activities. Sarah said, "I always have to go into situations where I don’t know people. . . . I have one arm and being mentally prepared for that is an ongoing challenge." Lisa reported that after she lost both of her forearms she was afraid to go out in public: "People would see me as a freak." She told a reporter she heard whispers from strangers who said, "So ugly." Lisa noted that while she has shrapnel scars on her face, "It’s nothing like not having arms. That’s what people notice when they see me."

It took me a while to be able to kneel. For the first two weeks of trying all I cold do was to get my knees on the floor and supporting my weight by laying on my couch with both knees on the carpet. I worked at that for two weeks and then was able to kneel while bending forward. It took a week before I could have my body strait up while kneeling. A couple weeks later I was able to kneel without and problems for 7 minutes, probably could have done it longer but it gets boring kneeling while looking at the sofa.
I am 56 and 6 weeks post-op bilateral knee replacement. My doctor and my physical therapist both told me I should not kneel due to the ‘button’ on the inside of the replaced knee caps. They are prone to becoming wedged and/ or bent if forced against the joint prosthesis, which would necessitate another surgery to undo the damage.
I have tried to garden and have found the easiest position is seated on a low stool (higher than a footstool). To rise I can use the legs of the stool or the seat itself for leverage and support. It’s not the best solution but it works for now.

Physicians at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will surgically implant micro-electrodes in the brain of a paralyzed patient to record neural signals that control arm movement. "The goal for the first participant is to demonstrate that we can use these neural recording arrays to control external devices over a one-year period," McLoughlin says. "We hope that they will be able to control the position and orientation of, and perform highly dexterous movements with, the Modular Prosthetic Limb."

What does this mean for someone with a handicap at one arm? The arm with the prosthesis determines the maximum resistance that you perform the exercise with. This means in practice that not the strongest arm will be trained, but rather the arm with the prosthesis. The focus is therefore automatically on the side with the arm prosthesis in the exercises for the upper body. During the exercises for the upper body, you are forced to divide strength well into your torso. Not only the muscles in the torso on both sides are being trained, but also the sense of balance in the torso is enhanced. This is why I think strength training, as a sport, is very suitable for someone with a prosthetic forearm. Strength training helps to strengthen important back muscles and it improves balance. Strength training is one of the few sports where the prosthetic forearm fully participates in sports.
