How do plants make food (photosynthesis basics)?

Plantsuse a process called photosynthesis to make food. During photosynthesis, plants trap light energy with their leaves. Plants use the energyof the sun to change water and carbon dioxide into a sugar called glucose.Glucose is used by plants for energy and to make other substances likecellulose and starch. Cellulose is used in building cell walls. Starchis stored in seeds and other plant parts as a food source. That's why somefoods that we eat, like rice and grains, are packed with starch!

Some organisms' position in the food chain can vary as their diet differs.

This process is extremely important for life on earth as it provides the oxygen that all other life depends on.

Just like humans and other living things, plants also need this food for many things. Let's see a few:

Glucose resulting from photosynthesis is used during respiration to release energy that the plant needs for other life processes.

The plant cells also convert some of the glucose into starch for storage. This can then be used when the plant needs them. This is why dead plants are used as biomass, because they have stored chemical energy in them)

Glucose is also needed to make other chemicals such as proteins, fats and plant sugars that are all needed for the plant to carry out essential growth and other life processes.

Numbers of Organisms:In any food web, energy is lost each time one organism eats another.

Photosynthesis is the process where plants make their own food from sunlight. Most plants are able to make food directly from light energy, for example the Sun, instead of eating other organisms or relying on nutrients. Photosynthesis can happen in plants because they have chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the pigment that makes plants green. Chlorophyll captures the Sun’s energy and uses it to make sugars out of carbon dioxide from the air and water. The sugars fuel a plant's roots, stems, and leaves so the plant can grow. After plants use the Sun's light to make their food, plants release oxygen into the air. This oxygen is very helpful because humans and animals need it to breathe. Make sure you thank plants for the oxygen you use everyday!

Plants are called . This is because they They do this by using light energy from the Sun, carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil to produce food - in the form of glucouse/sugar.

Plants make their own food thru the process of photosynthesis

The arrows in a food chain show the flow of energy, from the sun or hydrothermal vent to a top predator.

The next link in the chain is an organism that make its own food from the primary energy source -- an example is photosynthetic plants that make their own food from sunlight (using a process called photosynthesis) and chemosynthetic bacteria that make their food energy from chemicals in hydrothermal vents.

Most leaves are flat and contain ; their main function is to convert energy from sunlight into chemical energy (food) through photosynthesis.
- the part of the stem of a plant from which a leaf, branch, or aerial root grows; each plant has many nodes.
