Lachmann, also a proponent of the Fragmentary Hypothesis, subdivided the narrative portions of the synoptics into roughly nine separate sections and investigating how these sections were eventually arranged in the individual gospels. Lachmann concluded that the Mark's order best reflected a relatively fixed oral sequence for these sections and found reasons for Matthew and Luke to depart from this fixed oral sequence (, ET : 376-378 = : 119-131).

The Q hypothesis is used to explain why the form of the material sometimes appears more primitive in Matthew but other times more primitive in Luke in the face of very impressive exactness in wording in other parts of the double tradition (e.g. Matt 6:24 = Luke 16:13 for 27 of 28 Greek words and Matt 7:7-8 = Luke 11:9-10 for 24 of 24 Greek words).

Parker II: A half-century later, augmented his previous theory by adopting 's suggestion for a proto-Luke as the source of the Q and L material (), and then mixed in the Griesbach hypothesis by making Mark a conflation of proto-Matthew () and proto-Luke ().

The Two-Source Hypothesis (2SH) has been the predominant source theory for the synoptic problem for almost a century and half. Originally conceived in Germany by Ch. H. in 1838, the 2SH came to dominate German protestant scholarship after the fall of the Tübingen school with H. J. 's endorsement of a related variant in 1863. In the latter part of the 19th century, the Oxford School brought the 2SH to English scholarship, culminating in B. H. 's 1924 treatment of the synoptic problem. Now, the 2SH commands the support of most biblical critics from all continents and denominations.
