The Northern Renaissance - World history

They also give us insights how knowledge is spread. For these ideas of enumeration to be transmitted to society at large required conduits between centres of intellectual production, such as Renaissance Rome, and the rest of Europe. Fencing masters, who ultimately wrote to please their audience and who certainly fit into Long’s idea of ‘artist-practitioners’, performed this task admirably. By producing treatises that successfully applied the numeric turn to the subjects important or fashionable to those of status, or who aspired to status, writers such as Camillo Agrippa helped to popularize new ideas of human knowledge—at least until the scepticism of the later seventeenth century demanded a new, more didactic method. Still, the proportional methods these writers employed, the enumeration that linked the microcosm and the macrocosm — the enumeration of the dividers, not the meter-stick — was well-suited to fencing and other physical arts, and, as a conceptual tool, was highly successful.

The Italian Renaissance vs. the Northern Renaissance essay

By the time of the Reformation, the dominant influence in Frenchhumanism, as in humanism in general, came from a man who had studied inFrance for many years and who was personally acquainted with many of thehumanists there. Although he never returned to Paris after 1511, hiswritings were eagerly read there, and he had become the leading figure inEuropean culture. It is to this man, Erasmus, who better than anyone elserepresents the culmination of northern humanism, that we now turn.

In contrast with Paul Oskar Kristeller (see ), Eugenio Garin (b. 1909–d. 2004), professor of the history of philosophy at the University of Florence and the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, argued that humanism was a broad philosophy of life. Humanism included a positive evaluation of civic and worldly values, the primacy of the will, the dignity of man, Platonism, a sense of historical anachronism, and a new investigation of nature. In Garin’s view, humanism profoundly influenced all aspects of Renaissance thought and action, and he strongly emphasized the differences between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Garin’s scholarship on humanism has had enormous influence on Italian and European scholars, but less on North American scholars. provides his only comprehensive treatment of humanism, while , , and translate some of Garin’s elegant essays on various topics and individuals.

As the story of the Devotio Moderna has shown, there was now a body of laymenin the towns who sought a deeper religious experience than the institutionalforms the church was providing. The great mystics of the fourteenth century, though themselves clergymen, made a conscious effort to reach a broader audience, especially through vernacular sermons and writings. The first of the great Germanmystics was Meister Eckhart (c.1260-1327), a member of a noble family. ADominican, he held positions of administrative responsibility in the order andwas also a teacher and preacher. He preached to nuns and laymen and became themost popular preacher in Germany. A man of learning, he wrote Latin works forscholars, but produced sermons and devotional tracts in German that had a morepopular appeal. He was one of the first great masters of German prose. Inattempting to express his mystical concept of God, Eckhart had recourse toextreme and paradoxical statements. For example, nothing is so dissimilar as Godand His creatures, yet nothing is so similar. To define God or to attributespecific qualities to Him is to limit Him; therefore, Eckhart said, God isnothing and God is darkness.
