Purpose/Overview:The objective of the lab is to prepare a dye, either Malachite Green orCrystal Violet, using a reaction involving a Grignard reagent and anester. I will be making Malachite Green. TheGrignardreagent that is initially prepared is n-butyl magnesium bromide byreacting n-butyl bromide with magnesium in dry lab equipment, so thatthe resulting Grignard reagent does not react with water to form ahydrocarbon. The magnesium bromide is then transferred to4-bromo-N,N-dimethylaniline via transmetallation, which is done as ashort cut to what would otherwise be a lengthy reaction of an arylbromide and magnesium metal. The yield of the reaction willbedetermined by measuring the dye’s absorbance via a UV/visiblespectrophotometer and utilizing Beer’s law to calculate theconcentration of the dye. The dye will also be used to dye apiece of cloth.
The Grignard reagent was prepared from 4-bromo-N,N-dimethylaniline and combined with diethyl carbonate, then followed by acid hydrolysis, which led to the crystal violet.

Here we needtoset up a reflux apparatus making sure that the reactants have noexposure to water. Once the reaction is complete we will takeourdye, dilute samples of it, and find their absorbance using a UV/visiblespectrometer. The absorbance will be used to find theconcentration of the dye by Beer’s Law. The concentration anddye quantity will then be used to find our yield and percentyield. A piece of cloth will also be dyed with the productdye.
