And the stakes can be higher when you're talking about atrocities worse than bad papers. This is why nefarious government and corporate spokesmen are so fond of the passive voice: think of the notorious all-purpose excuse, “Mistakes were made.” Then think about how much weaseling is going on in a sentence like “It has been found regrettable that the villagers' lives were terminated” — notice especially how the agency has disappeared altogether. It should make you shudder.

The exclamation point (!) is used when a person wants to express a sudden outcry or add emphasis.

Note that sentence-ending periods should go outside the parentheses if the parenthetical remark is part of a larger sentence, but inside the parentheses if it's not embedded in a larger sentence. But it's usually best to go with apostrophe-s with all singular nouns, whether or not they end in s.

Use parentheses to enclose words or figures that clarify or are ..

In your example, there should not a comma after the closing parenthesis nor after “I.”

I think I was already following all these formal rules even before reading this post, because using them in such ways made the most sense to me. However, I do have a tendency to use it informally way too much. Well, at least I only do that with blogs and emails and I generally do realize it when it’s getting really, really out of hand.

I think that’s okay, Kelvin. I like it when bloggers use a casual tone and write informally. It works well in many types of writing and makes the work a little more reader-friendly.

It’s when you pepper them in, so, you know where, to add, dramatic pauses.

Parentheses ( ( ) ) are curved notations used to contain further thoughts or qualifying remarks. However, parentheses can be replaced by commas without changing the meaning in most cases.

the comma should go after the closing parenthesis: ..

The ellipsis is most commonly represented by three periods (. . . ) although it is occasionally demonstrated with three asterisks (***). The ellipsis is used in writing or printing to indicate an omission, especially of letters or words. Finally, don't get too hung-up on exactly which part of speech a word is playing — and don't approach the “eight parts of speech” with fundamentalist rigor.
