The concept of molecular mimicry is a simple one, and it is an area attracting considerable research related to the genesis of autoimmune disorders. Simply stated, environmental exposure to specific antigens (including dietary peptides and those expressed by microbes) can in genetically susceptible individuals induce cross-reactions with structurally similar amino acid motifs associated with specific host tissues. There are now multitudes of associations that have been firmly established between immune incompatibility with specific dietary-derived antigens, as well as the overgrowth of certain opportunistic and pathogenic gastrointestinal bacteria, and the presence of specific autoimmune disorders (Table 1).3 While some of these associations have been known for quite some time, mechanisms of causality are rapidly being established in the research. However, patients suffering from disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and autoimmune thyroiditis (i.e., Hashimoto's or Graves' disease) who visit a rheumatologist or endocrinologist do not routinely have stool analysis of their GI microbiota or food sensitivity testing performed. This is ironic, particularly in the case of opportunistic microbial overgrowth in the gut, as the conventional medical paradigm typically assumes an infectious cause, doesn't it? RAPD is the other technique (Williams et al. 1990), which has been successfully used to genetically profile many different plant species, such as almond (Bartolozzi et al. 1998), (Baum et al. 2001), hybrid strawberries (Degani et al. 1998), (Gavidia et al. 1996) and (Sangwan et al. 1999). This technique uses small oligonucleotides (~10 bps) that differ in their DNA sequence. The binding of these oligonucleotides is fairly nucleotide specific but the sites are relatively random within the genome. DNA segments are amplified where two primers bind in close proximity to each other in the opposite orientation. RAPD is a lower cost technique when compared to AFLP but the results are highly dependent on the quality of the DNA and the PCR conditions, therefore reproducibility between labs is often difficult to achieve.

In addition, the colonies appear in a semi-circular state indicating that development radiates outwards from a central point. Numerous colonies in close proximity to one another are common in wooded areas of the South. Some patches are so extensive that they are probably the result of either integration of several colonies or represent a single clonal population of ancient origins. Genetic analyses are needed to determine the composition of these large colonies and the relationship between patches within the same site. To our knowledge, no previous genetic analysis has determined how neighboring colonies are derived, from various seedlings or asexually from a single source.
