Likewise, a channel ina color image will involve one bit in the red band, one in the green band, and onein the blue band. The decomposition of a color image into its component bands is shown in thefigures below. Figures 2 through 4 show the red band, blue band, and green bandof the image shown in Figure 1.
Each band value in a digital image is represented as a unsigned eight-bitinteger. Hence, a greyscale pixel can represent 256 shades of grey with 0representing black and 255 white. Likewise, each of the bands in a color pixelcan represent 256 shades of the band color. In each case, 0 represents anabsence of the band color and 255 represents the band color. (eg. A red bandvalue of 255 represents red.) The values between 0 and 255 representsuccessively lighter shades of the band color.

A digital image can be represented as a rectangular grid of pixels (the dotswe see), where eachpixel displays either a color or shade of grey. For a greyscale image, eachpixel has a singlevalue. For a color image, each pixel has a red, a eight green, and a bluecomponent. These components are referred to as bands. Hence, a color pixel has three bands and a greyscale pixel has a single band.
The CSImage class provides the basic functionality needed to extract the colorbands of a digital image and the bitwise operators provide means of encoding/decodinga message. However, the process of inserting the bits in a cover or extractingthem form a stego image is tricky at best. In order to make these processeseasier it would is helpful to provide two additional classes-one that produces astream of bits from the channels of an image and one that consumes a stream bitsby embedding them in an image. Figure 10 shows the design of the ImageInputStreamclass-the bit stream producer. Figure 11 shows the design of theImageOutputStream-the bit stream consumer. Note that the implementation ofeach involves keeping track of current bit position in terms of the column,row, and band.
