What is Spondylolisthesis? - DISC Spine
This is the commonest cause of lumbar spondylolisthesis above the age of 50. Degenerative changes of the facet joints and associated disc degeneration are responsible for the anterior slip, which is usually mild.
Although computed tomography (CT) is poor for demonstrating spondylolisthesis, it is useful in demonstrating pars interarticularis (isthmus) defects, facet arthropathy, canal diameter, foraminal stenosis, and disc herniation. When combined with myelography (static or dynamic flexion and extension views), CT may demonstrate evidence of nerve-root compression and concomitant instability. Myelography is generally not indicated unless neurologic signs or pain unexplained by findings other imaging methods exists.
treatment for spondylolisthesis - herniated disc treatment
Spondylolisthesis may or may not be associated with gross instability of the spine. Some individuals remain asymptomatic even with high-grade slips, but most complain of some discomfort. It may cause any degree of symptoms, from minimal symptoms of occasional low back pain to incapacitating mechanical pain, radiculopathy from nerve root compression, and neurogenic claudication.
Spondylolisthesis, which means "slipped disc," is defined as a condition where one vertebra slides forward over the vertebra directly underneath it. With isthmic spondylolisthesis, the condition begins with a small stress fracture in the lumbar region of the spine. Approximately five percent of adults have such a fracture, with the majority acquiring it as the result of childhood injury. Due to the near constant motion of the back, this fracture may not heal as it would in other bones of the body.
degenerative spondylolisthesis, and intervertebral disc ..
Often, isthmic spondylolisthesis will not develop into a serious condition. Many adults have the fracture without ever experiencing slippage, while others have a small degree of slippage without having symptoms. However, if the protruding vertebra comes into contact with adjacent nerves, you may feel pain and/or numbness in your lower back, leg, and buttocks, with motion increasing your discomfort.
