Therefore, we see how dysfunctional beliefs tie in at an early age with internalized cognitive thinking, which gives us better insight into how our childhood has a strong correlation to whether or not we will be vulnerable to depression.Since Beck formed his theory, it has catalyzed a lot of work involving cognitive theory and depression, which during the time was rare.

Cognitive-behavioral techniques have proved extremely effective in treating depression.

Beck's cognitive theory states that depression is caused by negative thoughts and dysfunctional beliefs, and the belief that women must agree to a larger role in the household would be a strong addition to her point.

Beck's cognitive theory of depression: The diathesis-stress and causal mediation components.

The specifier is intended to identify clients with anxiety symptoms that are not part of the bipolar diagnostic criteria. Important differences exist between bipolar disorder with and without comorbid anxiety. Lifetime comorbid bipolar disorders and anxiety are associated with decreased likelihood of recovery, poorer role functioning and quality of life, less time experiencing euthymia, and greater likelihood of suicide attempts. The presence of higher levels of anxiety during manic or hypomanic episodes appears to mark an illness of substantially greater long-term depressive morbidity. Overall, the outcome in bipolar-related disorders is worse in the presence of comorbid anxiety. The coexistence of anxiety presents a particularly difficult challenge in the treatment of bipolar-related disorder illness because antidepressants, the mainstay of pharmacologic treatments for anxiety, may adversely alter the course of the illness.

“However, caution is indicated so that one or two symptoms (particularly increased irritability, edginess, or agitation following antidepressant use) are not taken as sufficient for diagnosis of a hypomanic episode, nor necessarily indicative of a bipolar diathesis” (APA, 2013, p. 125).

As might be expected, the impact of infant colic is felt more by the parents, particularly mothers who have the burden of caring for the excessively crying child. Mothers reported more symptoms of psychological distress24,25 and low self-efficacy.26,27 And, although mothers report more depressive symptoms at the time their infants are experiencing colic,28,29 research on maternal depression 3 months after the remittance of infant colic is mixed.30,31 The distress mothers of colic infants report may arise out of their difficulties in soothing their infants as well as within their everyday dyadic interactions.32 The few studies to date that have examined the long-term consequences of having a colicky child, however, indicate that there are no negative outcomes for parent behaviour and, importantly, for the parent-child relationship. In two separate studies,15,16 mothers of colic and non-colic infants were observed to be alike in maternal sensitivity shortly after the colic resolved. These results may explain why infant who developed colic were on the parent‑child relationship have been found. Infants who developed colic were no more likely to be insecurely attached than infants who did not have colic.26

Why Women Are More Susceptible to Depression

Allen stated that females were more likely than males to be depressed due to "mixed signals from society." Although this is probably true, it is well documented that females have other underlying causes for the susceptibility to depression, including biological differences, age prevalence of depression differences, sex/gender-role identity differences, depression rate and recurrence differences, and comorbidity differences in males and females. It is also important to note that the cited research determined that Beck's cognitive theory of depression is central to negative thoughts only.
