Video: Differences Between Chemosynthesis & Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which organisms use light to make energy-rich compounds.
DEFINITIONS
Bacteria that convert chemicals (such as sulfur) into a form that can be used for energy
What do organisms in hydrothermal vents depend upon for energy?
There is no light deep in the ocean, so plants cannot photosynthesize
Why are plants unable to survive in hydrothermal vents?
Plants
What type of organisms usually forms the basis of all food chains?
Chemosynthetic bacteria
Shrimp
Clams
Fish
Tubeworms
What type of organisms live in hydrothermal vents?
Deep in the ocean
No light
High temperature fluids
Chemicals (ex: sulfur)
What are the characteristics of a hydrothermal vent environment?

ENERGY = the ability to do work or cause change
What is energy?
METABOLISM
Energy Pathways
enzymes!
We don’t just eat glucose!

How do we break down the carbs that we eat into glucose to be used for cellular respiration?
Releases energy from the glucose (monosaccharide) that can be used in the cell.
Released energy is in the form of ATP
Occurs in the mitochondria of ALL cells
Cell Respiration
Brainstorm with your partner about the process of Cellular Respiration.

Chemosynthesis is the process by which organisms use inorganic chemicals to make energy-rich compounds.1.

Ecosystems depend upon the ability of some organisms to convert inorganic compounds into food that other organisms can then exploit. In most cases, primary food production occurs in a process called photosynthesis, which is powered by sunlight. In a few environments, primary production happens though a process called chemosynthesis, which runs on chemical energy. Together, photosynthesis and chemosynthesis fuel all life on Earth.

The diagram below compares examples of these two processes - chemosynthesis in a seafloor hydrothermal vent bacterium, and photosynthesis in a terrestrial plant.

The Mid-Ocean Ridge and rift valleys, such as the one that runs through eastern Africa, occur along boundaries where plates are spreading apart. New oceanic crust is created as the plates separate and molten rock rises up from the mantle and fills the space. The earthquakes and the volcanic eruptions along the Mid-Ocean Ridges are a direct result of this process.
