photosynthetically active radiation

To summarise: For the rate of photosynthesis to increase beyond a
certain point, it cannot be relied on for just 1 of the 4 limiting
factors to increase, after a certain point ALL must increase for the
rate to increase.

In this experiment we were told that we would be measuring the rate of photosynthesis.

Moroney JV and Somanchi A (1999) How do algae concentrate CO2 to increase the efficiency of photosynthetic carbon fixation? Plant Physiology 119: 9–16.

They do this by a process called Photosynthesis.

In order for photosynthesis to occur sunlight and chlorophyll must be present.

The further away the light, the slower the oxygen bubbles will be produced so the less light the less photosynthesis will occur which is needed for the plant to make food....

Algae are a very diverse group of predominantly aquatic photosynthetic organisms that account for almost 50% of the photosynthesis that takes place on Earth. Algae have a wide range of antenna pigments to harvest light energy for photosynthesis giving different types of algae their characteristic colour. Early work done with algae contributed much to what is presently known about the carbon dioxide fixation pathway and the light harvesting reactions. The processes of photosynthesis in algae and higher plants are very similar. From among the three types of carbon dioxide‐concentrating mechanisms known in photosynthetic organisms, two types are found in different types of algae. Algae are proposed to play a role in the global carbon cycle by helping remove excess carbon dioxide from the environment. Recently, algae are recognized as a promising biodiesel source due to its efficient absorption and conversion of solar energy into chemical energy.

Photosynthesis need light to work, so light therefore should speed up the rate of photosynthesis.

My results also appear to agree with the information on the
theories of photosynthesis, found in most biology texts; though I did
not have enough evidence (results) to prove the theory which says that
after a certain point the rate will cease to rise, as explained
previously.

We have also learnt that photosynthesis is a vital process that occurs in order to create glucose and oxygen, by transforming carbon dioxide and water in the presence of light energy.

I will place a piece of cut pondweed into a beaker containing water and sodium hydrogen carbonate.

The aim was to show that light is necessary for photosynthesis.

I will measure the rate of photosynthesis by counting the number of bubbles that are released by the stem of the pond-weed when the lamp is shone on it from different distances.

The way they do this is called photosynthesis.

[Again, no change will occur because no plant is present and photosynthesis is not occurring therefore the acidity of the solution remains the same.]

Photosynthesis takes place in all plants that contain chlorophyll.

Background information: Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is the process of autotrophs turning carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen, using light energy from sunlight.

Organisms Depend Upon Photosynthesis 1.

All plants and animals on earth engage in a process called respiration. Respiration combines oxygen and the food created during photosynthesis to produce usable energy.

Most food chains start with photosynthesizers.

Respiration doesn’t depend on light; it goes on 24 hours a day, so that plants and animals have enough energy to perform the basic functions that keep them alive.

Photosynthesis is the procedure all plants go through to make food.

However, during the day, the amount of oxygen plants release as part of photosynthesis makes the amount of oxygen they consume for respiration seem negligible.

Photosynthesis is the method that plants use to make their own food.

Several species of marine benthic algae, four species of phytoplankton and two species of seagrass have been subjected to ultraviolet B irradiation for varying lengths of time and the effects on respiration, photosynthesis and fluorescence rise kinetics studied. No effect on respiration was found. Photosynthesis was inhibited to a variable degree in all groups of plants after irradiation over periods of up to 1 h and variable fluorescence was also inhibited in a similar way. The most sensitive plants were phytoplankton and deep-water benthic algae. Intertidal benthic algae were the least sensitive to UV-B irradiation and this may be related to adaptation, through the accumulation of UV-B screening compounds, to high light/high UV-B levels. Inhibition of variable fluorescence (Fv) of the fluorescence rise curve was a fast and sensitive indicator of UV-B damage. Two plants studied, a brown alga and a seagrass, showed very poor recovery of Fv over a period of 32 h.
