While current artificial photosynthesis methods are far less efficient than the natural process, there has been continual progress in the field. One of the reasons that the technology is being pursued is that, compared to current solar panel technology, molecular nanoparticles are cheaper, lighter, and more environmentally sound. Aside from providing a renewable energy source and eliminating our reliance on rapidly diminishing fossil fuels, it has also been suggested that artificial photosynthesis on a large industrial scale could reverse global warming since the process consumes carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. With the potential of such beneficial impacts on the environment and our energy supply, continued research into combining nanotechnology and natural processes should remain a central goal.
The word equation for photosynthesis is: Light [IMAGE]Carbon Dioxide + Water Glucose + Oxygen Chlorophyll Although most of the glucose produced is converted into insoluble starch for storage in the stem, leaves or roots, some is used immediately by the plant to provide via respiration....

Plants absorb water through their roots, and carbon dioxide through their leaves. Some glucose is used for respiration, while some is converted into insoluble for storage. The stored starch can later be turned back into glucose and used in respiration. Oxygen is released as a by-product of photosynthesis.
C3: Rice, soybean, wheat, rye, oats,
millet, barley, potato
C4: Maize (corn), sorghum, pearl millet
CAM: Pineapple, Cactus
The C4 plant will have the highest rate of photosynthesis over 12 hours of daylight compared to CAM and C3 plants because C4 plants can thrive in direct sunlight and it uses Pep carboxylase instead of Rubisco.
There will be one plant of each kind; a soybean plant is a C3 plant, a sugarcane plant is a C4 plant, and a cactus is a Cam plant.
There will be 3 chambers with intense sunlight(50 watts)
shining into all of the chambers equally.

In artificial photosynthesis, scientists are essentially conducting the same fundamental process that occurs in natural photosynthesis but with simpler nanostructures. The fabrication of these nanostructures has only recently been possible due to breakthroughs in nanotechnology in the areas of imaging and manipulation. With the core processes in photosynthesis being light gathering, charge separation, and recombination, the goal of scientists has been to create efficient synthetic nanostructures that can function as antennae and reaction centers. Devens Gust and fellow researchers at Arizona State University created a hexad, or six-part, nanoparticle made of four zinc tetraarylporphyrin molecules, (PZP)3-PZC, a free-base porphyrin, and a fullerene molecule, P-C60.
The plants are the independent variables and the amount of oxygen is the dependent variable because its amount present will depend on the rate of photosynthesis of each plant in each chamber.

Concept 1: Gene Regulation in Bacteria
These O2 measurements for each plant will be compared to the control.
Which plant type(C4, C3, Cam), will have the highest rate of photosynthesis over 12 hours of daylight?
In C4 plants, the initial steps of carbon fixation are separated structurally from the calvin cycle, whearas in Cam plants, the two steps occur at separate times but within the same cell.
Review (1 page) Concept 2: The Lactose Operon
Control: Oxygen % In Chamber
% of O2 After 12 Hours in Sunlight:
% of Oxygen change from initial:
The C4 plant had a much higher rate of photosynthesis than Cam and C3.
What is Photosynthesis? (with pictures) - wiseGEEK
The three major components of photosynthesis are the antenna, the reaction center, and the site of recombination. The antenna, which is composed of chlorophyll molecules in plants, collects or “harvests” the light energy from the sun. The energy then goes through a number of stages of energy transfer until it is ready for the reaction center. In the reaction center, the energy is used to drive a charge separation reaction, which produces an electron and a so-called “electron hole” where the electron was removed from. Next, certain structures in the membrane of the cell recombine the charges, a process which creates usable electrochemical energy that is then stored in adenosine triphosphate molecules, also known as ATP.
How the C4 and CAM pathways help minimize photorespiration.
Variables: The variables that might affect the rate of photosynthesis in this experiment are: Temperature: When the temperature rises so does the rate of photosynthesis; this is because as the temperature around the plant rises the enzymes controlling photosynthesis inside the chloroplasts heat up and start moving around faster, the fast moving molecules collide with other fast moving enzymes causing them to react....

This process is also affected by the temperature surrounding the plant (the species of plant we experimented with, pond weed, photosynthesised best at around 20 degrees centigrade.) Light, temperature & CO2 are known as limiting factors, and each is as important as the next in photosynthes...
