2010: The Year Of Awesome

As most of you know by now, 2009 is over and 2010 has finally arrived and I plan to make it awesome. I know what your going to ask, “How awesome?”. Don’t worry I’ll get to that. Before I do, lets do a quick recap of what 2009 brought me. First off, I attended SXSW Interactive (flickr) for the first time down in Austin. Yes, it really is all people claim it to be. It can be a good chunk of money but beyond worth it with what you leave with. I had a chance to do a few things I’ve always wanted to while at SXSW. This included attending a live taping of Diggnation and the Totally Rad Show. Both of which were just awesome, despite the long wait in line for both. The day after SXSW I took my family on our first vacation. Our destination was San Antonio, TX (flickr). Our first stop was a place I have wanted to go to since I was a kid, Sea World (flickr). I was happy that I was able to take my kids to enjoy it. While in San Antonio we took the Historic Mission Bus Tour, walked around the river walk, waited in line way too long for The Alamo, and went to the top of the Tower of the Americas. However, my favorite place, besides Sea World, was getting to eat at the Rainforest Cafe. We had been told by several people to check it out and the long wait in line was worth it. The atmosphere and food were great.

Is that it for 2009? Of course not. In fact, thats only a week of it. I was also pretty excited that my son was starting First Grade and my daughter was entering Pre-K. I also attended WordCamp Dallas ’09 (flickr) with a few guys from DigiMedia. Later I attended CodeWorks ’09 in Dallas with John Hoover. Note to self: find more conferences in the TX/OK area for 2010. I attempted to start up a monthly Wichita Falls Tweetup. After a few great turnouts it seemed to fall apart and we haven’t had one in awhile. My Apple Fanboy stock went up a little this past year as well when I switched from my G1 to an iPhone. After being invited to a Wildcats Hockey game by John, I’ve grown to love it and have since attended several games and more to come. I also celebrated my 1 year at DigiMedia on August 1st, which also marked my 1 year since leaving the freelance world. I left DigiMedia on October 1st to join Crane | West Advertising Agency. Just a short few months with the new company and its been awesome. Getting the chance to work on a lot of different sites for a variety of clients. Even though this past year has been good to us, it hasn’t been great. I didn’t take advantage of things nearly as much as I should have. It feels frustrating to have a constant flow of ideas or thoughts for side projects and never get around to doing something. This is where Twenty Ten comes into play.

Now back to your question, “How awesome?”. My one and only true goal for this year is simple. Do something! Thats it. I want to write a web app. I want to release an iPhone app. I want to start a side blog (if I can keep this one updated). I want to start a podcast. Is that too much to ask for? I think not. The guys at work and I have talked about a podcast on and off for several months and I think now is the time to do it. We have all had ideas for side projects, apps, etc. No more talking about it. Now its time to actually do something. Twenty Ten is my year to finally do something and I plan to make the ┬ámost of it (tune in for my follow up post in 12 months to see how things went).

Before wrapping this post up, I wanted to mention that as part of my plan to post more I have joined Project 52. The goal is to write at least one post a week for the year. Doesn’t sound that hard right? It shouldn’t be. In fact if your interested I believe you can still register, as long as you have your first post up by January 7th. There seems to be a good community building behind it and lots of encouragement and suggestions for posts coming from a lot of people. This should be the push I need to attempt to crank out quality posts. I’ve also missed shooting video blogs the past year and plan to get back into it, so expect more video again and not just posts. My first ‘do something’ goal is to put up my redesign for this site. Its about 98% complete but I can’t seem to stop tweaking it. Maybe in the next few days it will go up. Now to leave you with a question. How awesome are you going to make this year?
